We Finally Know What China Discovered on the Far Side of the Moon

The far side of the Moon has been one of the mysterious places for a very long time. It is hidden from view from Earth. This area has craters, old mountains and special features that scientists are still trying to learn about.

China has now made a change in how people study this mysterious place.

In June 2024 the Chang'e-6 mission from China brought back rocks from the side of the Moon. This was the time in history that scientists had real samples from this area to study in labs on Earth.

What they found was more than rocks. These small pieces had clues about eruptions the inside of the Moon the Moons magnetic past and a huge impact that helped shape the surface.

These discoveries are helping scientists understand why the two sides of the Moon look so different.

Chinas mission reached a part of the Moon.

The Chang'e-6 lander touched down in the Apollo basin. This is part of the South Pole–Aitken basin. This old impact area is one of the oldest basins in the Solar System.

Scientists have wanted to study this place for a time. A hit this big might have brought up. Moved material from deep inside the Moon.

Earlier missions brought back rocks from the side of the Moon. Those are the parts that face Earth. Although some spacecraft mapped the side they could not give the same details as real rocks.

Chang'e-6 changed that.

The mission brought back about 1.94 kilograms of Moon rocks to Earth. Scientists could now study the makeup and history of rocks that had never been brought back from this area before.

New volcanic activity was found in the samples.

One of the discoveries was about the Moons volcanic past.

Scientists found signs that the far side had activity at different times. This included around 4.2 billion years ago. 2.8 Billion years ago.

This means the far side had activity for a very long time. It did not stop soon after the Moon formed.

The samples also showed rocks made from lava. By checking the age and chemistry of these rocks scientists can see when molten rock came to the surface. They can also see how the inside of the Moon changed over time.

This is important because the near side has dark areas from old lava. The far side has a crust and fewer of these areas. Understanding the sides volcanic history could explain why the two sides are so different.

A big hit that may have changed the Moon forever.

Another big question is about the South Pole–Aitken basin itself.

This big area was made by a hit early in the Moons life. The hit made a lot of energy. It might have brought up material melted rocks and moved elements around.

Looking at the Chang'e-6 samples has helped scientists study how this event changed the Moons inside and surface.

Some of the rocks brought back show signs of processes connected to the basins start and later changes. Scientists are using this to test ideas about how the Moons outside and inside formed.

Exactly what the hit did is still being studied.. The samples give a new way to understand one of the biggest events in the Moons history.

Scientists found differences in the Moons inside.

The far side is not a different look. The rocks there also show a difference down.

Looking at the Chang'e-6 samples scientists found that some rocks from the side had less water than rocks from the near side.

Water in Moon rocks does not mean there is water on the surface. It can be in amounts inside minerals. It can also be trapped in lava rocks. This helps scientists learn about how the rocks formed.

These measurements can help understand how water and other elements spread inside the Moon. It can also show how big hits and lava activity changed the Moons inside.

Scientists are still studying if the area they looked at is the same as the far side.. The results show a new way to see the Moons inside.

An old magnetic field left its mark.

The rocks brought back showed information about the Moons old magnetic field.

Today the Moon does not have a magnetic field like Earth.. Rocks can keep signs of magnetic conditions when they were formed.

By looking at the parts of Moon rocks scientists found signs that the Moons magnetic field might have gotten stronger again around 2.8 billion years ago.

This is important because scientists want to know how the Moon once had a field. They also want to know how that changed as the inside of the Moon cooled.

The findings give clues, about the Moons inside.. Scientists need more evidence to fully understand the Moons magnetic past.

Why Is the Far Side So Different From the Near Side?

This remains one of sciences biggest unanswered questions.

The near side contains dark plains formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. The far side in contrast is dominated by cratered highlands and has a thicker crust across much of its surface.

Several explanations have been proposed. Differences in thickness the distribution of heat-producing elements ancient impacts and the temperature of the lunar interior may all have played a role.

Studies of Chang'e-6 samples suggest that some side volcanic material formed under cooler conditions than comparable near-side rocks. That finding supports the idea that the Moons two hemispheres followed geological paths.

However no single explanation has yet resolved every part of the mystery. The samples are helping scientists narrow down the possibilities and test theories against lunar material.

What About the Strange Soil China Brought Back?

The mission also revealed physical properties in the far-side lunar soil.

Researchers found that the material was relatively fine-grained and tended to clump more strongly than some previously studied lunar samples.

Detailed analysis suggested that the behavior could be explained by a combination of particle friction, weak attractions between particles and electrostatic forces. The shape and size of the grains also appear to influence how the soil behaves.

This may sound like a discovery but it could become important for future lunar exploration.

Engineers designing landers, rovers, scientific instruments and possible surface habitats need to understand how lunar soil moves, sticks and reacts to equipment. Differences in soil behavior can affect everything from landing operations to construction techniques.

Did China Discover Something Alien on the Moon?

The idea of a hidden structure, alien technology or an unexplained object on the side often attracts attention online.. The confirmed scientific findings from Chang'e-6 concern lunar rocks, ancient impacts, volcanic activity, magnetic history and the Moons chemical composition.

There is no evidence that the mission discovered alien technology or an artificial structure.

The real discoveries are significant in their right. They provide scientists with the samples collected directly from the lunar far side and allow researchers to investigate its history using evidence that was previously unavailable.

Sometimes the extraordinary discoveries are not mysterious objects but small fragments of rock that reveal what happened billions of years ago.

The Moons Biggest Secrets May Still Be Waiting

Chinas Chang'e-6 mission has opened a chapter in lunar exploration. Its samples are helping researchers investigate volcanic eruptions the effects of giant impacts the Moons magnetic history and the differences between its two hemispheres.

Many questions remain unanswered.

Scientists still need to determine how the South Pole–Aitken impact changed the lunar interior, why volcanic activity was distributed unevenly and how the Moons crust evolved over time.

Future missions could collect samples from regions and help researchers determine whether the findings from Chang'e-6 represent the wider far side.

For now one thing is clear: the side of the Moon that remained hidden from view for so long is no longer a complete mystery. With every sample examined scientists are uncovering another piece of its history—and discovering just how much there is still to learn about our closest neighbor, in space.
