Their focus has been primarily on Mars as a possible new home for humanity, but their reasons go far beyond a simple desire to explore space.
Elon Musk , the visionary CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has been vocal for years about his belief that humans need to establish a “second planet.”
Their focus has been primarily on Mars as a possible new home for humanity, but their reasons go far beyond a simple desire to explore space.
According to an interview on “The Joe Rogan Experience” , Musk warns that the need for a backup planet is an urgent, life-or-death matter.
Since he became a public figure, Musk has been dedicated to the idea of colonizing Mars or at least creating a self-sustaining human presence on another planet.
While his plans may seem ambitious, Musk emphasizes that the risks we face on Earth make this effort essential.
“We must have a second planet to preserve civilization,” Musk said in his interview. “Let’s assume, hypothetically, that [ a civilizational extinction event ] will probably happen on Earth at some point,” he warned.
Why a “Second Planet” is Crucial
Musk's logic is rooted in the very real existential threats facing Earth. He therefore points out that there are several scenarios that could destroy humanity.
So it’s no longer a question of what events will
happen, but when.
The idea of a “second planet” isn’t just about exploration, it’s about survival.
Is Mars the answer?
Even though colonizing Mars may seem like a distant dream, Elon Musk is determined to make it happen. SpaceX has already taken significant steps to make interplanetary travel more accessible, with the ultimate goal of creating a self-sustaining colony on Mars.
Musk has stated that he wants to die on the Red Planet, thus reinforcing his commitment to this long-term vision.
However, there are still many challenges to be overcome, from developing technology for safe and efficient space travel to ensuring that Mars can support human life in the long term.
So the road to colonization is long and full of
obstacles. Despite these challenges, Musk believes the effort is worth
it—because, in his view, it’s only a matter of time before Earth faces an
existential threat.
