Scientists Now Propose that the Big Bang Created a Mirror Universe Expanding in Opposite Direction



The Big Bang theory has been the foundation of modern cosmology for decades, describing how the universe started from a singularity around 13.8 billion years ago and has been expanding since. But now, a revolutionary new theory is that our universe may not be unique—now scientists suggest the Big Bang could have given rise to a "mirror universe" that expands in the opposite direction of time at the same time.

A Universe Tuning Backward in Time?

This interesting concept is a result of scientists investigating the basic symmetries of physics. The idea is that when the Big Bang happened, it could have spawned not only our universe, which progresses in time, but also a mirror universe where time proceeds in reverse. While we perceive time going from the past to the future, the mirror universe would be having its own sequence from our future back to its past.

Though this sounds like science fiction, the hypothesis is based on a basic rule of physics called CPT symmetry—Charge, Parity, and Time. This theory indicates that the physical laws should not change if charge (C), space coordinates (P), and time (T) are all reversed. As the observable universe does not seem to follow this symmetry precisely, scientists assume there must be an equivalent that makes up for it.

Could We Ever See This Mirror Universe?

If this mirror universe does indeed exist, it would be almost beyond us to detect it directly, since it would be utterly disconnected from our own reality. Its existence could account for some of the universe's greatest mysteries, though, like the nature of dark matter. Some physicists theorize that the enigmatic dark matter—a form of invisible stuff that comprises most of the mass of the universe—might be made up of particles from this mirror universe.

Moreover, this theory may offer a solution to the inflation concept, which explains the sudden growth of the universe in the moments following the Big Bang. Rather than necessitating an abrupt, unexplained inflation, the existence of a mirror universe may naturally counterbalance the growth we see today.

What This Means for Our Understanding of the Cosmos

If true, this concept would transform our conception of space, time, and reality itself. It implies time is not always a linear path and that there may be a reality occurring in reverse to our own. Although there is currently no direct proof, future research in particle physics and cosmology may yield evidence leading to this incredible possibility.

For the moment, the mirror universe is a rich theoretical notion, but with developing knowledge in physics, who's to say one day we'll discover we aren't alone to have arisen out of the Big Bang but part of an ancient cosmic symmetry.
