The difference between time zones around the world resulted in a real trip back in time for the crew of the Boeing CPA880, from the airline Cathay Pacific. The plane,which departed Hong Kong in the early hours of January 1, 2025, will arrive at its final destination in 2024.
The flight departed Hong Kong International Airport at 00:38 (local time), which was New Year's Eve in the Chinese administrative region. It is expected to arrive at its final destination, Los Angeles, at around 19:58 (local time) on December 31, 2024.
Hong Kong is about 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles, which would allow the Boeing CPA880 to take off in 2025 but then go back in time and land on US soil before New Year's Eve.
Just like in New Zealand, Australia and other
countries in Oceania and Asia, Hong Kong's time zone means that New Year's Eve
in the region is celebrated earlier than in Brazil.
