One of Joe Rogan's latest topics on his show has left viewers in the public space, discussing the strange object of 'Oumuamua, which passed through the solar system in 2017. New facts that have been recently available on 'Oumuamua, along with the presumably declassified images of that object, have started discussion again on its origins—is it an asteroid, is it a comet, or, as some of them speculate, an alien spaceship?
The Mysterious History of 'Oumuamua
Discovered in October 2017 by astronomers from the
Haleakalā Observatory in Hawaii, 'Oumuamua is translated as "scout"
or "messenger" in Hawaiian. This object was the first ever
interstellar detected within our solar system. The hyperbolic trajectory it
possessed was an indicator that the origin of the object is from outside of our
solar system. Since its origin, scientists are still baffled by the nature of
this visitor. Apart from being remarkably fast, this asteroid-shape defies that
structure of any existing known comet or asteroid for that matter.
Declassified Images: What Does it show?
On the Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan discussed declassified images and theories about 'Oumuamua's strange properties. The supposed images depict this object as cigar-shaped, measuring approximately 800 meters in length but only about 80 meters in width. What is unusual is that most naturally occurring celestial bodies would tend to be more rounded or irregularly shaped from gravitational forces, so a long, thin shape in 'Oumuamua has puzzled astronomers.
In images, 'Oumuamua seems a dark featureless one having a peculiar glint sighted during its rotation. This "glinting" can be associated as metallic or reflective material leading to ideas of being the artificial in origin. As a matter of fact, some researchers, and for example the well-known American astrophysicist Avi Loeb assume that 'Oumuamua may be some interstellar alien probe or with artificial characteristics because of unique acceleration of this space messenger.
Interstellar Traveling Rogue or Alien Probe?
One interesting thing about the trajectory of the 'Oumuamua was its acceleration away from the solar system. The kind of behavior could have been related to that which a comet is undergoing - outgassing; meaning gas released as the surface of the comet would absorb solar heating- yet this was not present with the 'Oumuamua. This sort of phenomenon has been explained as what some experts term an instance of 'Oumuamua being a light sail-a theoretical device employing the pressure of solar radiation as a means to propel it.
Joe Rogan took it further discussing these theories and why Loeb and other researchers feel that the object could be of intelligent design. According to Loeb, if 'Oumuamua is artificial, it could represent an alien civilization's means of interstellar exploration.
A Glimpse into the Unknown
Rogan raises important questions on our perception of interstellar objects. While some astronomers believe the unusual behavior of 'Oumuamua can be explained by physics we do not yet understand, others argue that it is too anomalous to be dismissed as merely an odd asteroid or comet. Is this object an ancient probe from a distant civilization, or does it reveal gaps in our knowledge of cosmic bodies?
The declassified images of Rogan fuel an already charged debate. Whatever may be true, 'Oumuamua has indeed expanded the scopes of scientific inquiry and made discussions over the possibilities of extraterrestrial life as well as interstellar communications.
In this age of increasingly expanding space
exploration, a Joe Rogan foray into the mystery of 'Oumuamua reminds us of how
much more we have to discover and how one strange object can be forced upon us
to think otherwise about our place in the cosmos.
