5 Times NASA Caught UFOs on Camera

For several decades, the question about UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) has been a hot topic of discussion among experts and the public. With hundreds of missions to outer space, as well as ongoing monitoring of our atmosphere and beyond, at times NASA captures photographs that even the most critical minds cannot fathom. Here are five cases in which NASA captured something odd on camera, sparking speculations over extraterrestrial activity.

1. STS-48 Shuttle Mission (1991) – Mysterious Objects in the Earth's Atmosphere

STS-48 Shuttle Mission recorded possibly the most famous UFO sighting ever in NASA space history when strange objects were captured on camera and filmed by crew members while the space shuttle was orbiting over Earth. Cameras saw the series of tiny objects starting to whizz in various directions. The small objects appeared initially stationary before suddenly changing directions and zooming off into space at fantastic speeds.

It was supposed that Shuttle saw the products of ice particles responding to the thrusters. But swift changing in direction and speed of these objects made everyone believe that these were not just ice particles, but something far more complex. Ufologists said that an intelligent-controlled spacecraft could be behind these strange movements.

2. STS-75 Tether Incident (1996) - Swarming UFOs?

Another intriguing finding came from the STS-75 Shuttle Mission in 1996, more famously known as the "Tether Incident." In the experiment by NASA, the issue dealt with a 12-mile-long conductive tether that was supposed to harvest electricity from Earth's magnetic field. Unfortunately, the tether broke off and started floating into space, and that was what was going to later cause much confusion.

There were dozens of round things around the tether that seemed to swarm the broken line. These would glow with some sort of light and fly in all sorts of erratics. Some UFO enthusiasts say these were extraterrestrial in origin, while NASA claimed it was just space debris illuminated by sunlight. Regardless of NASA's excuse, this is still a very hot topic in UFO circles.

3. Apollo 16 Mission to the Moon-1972,

Saucer-shaped Object over the Moon In the historic Apollo 16 mission during 1972, astronauts shot a very short video of the lunar lunar surface that showed a saucer-shaped object hovering over the Moon's lunar surface. It could be seen how this bright object moved across the dark lunar landscape, looked to hover above some crater, and disappeared from view.

Initially, the space agency attributed the object to camera glare or reflections from the window of the spacecraft. But many UFO enthusiasts do not agree and maintain that the clearness and distinct saucer shape of the object make it possible for it to be an extraterrestrial craft for surveillance on the activities of the astronauts. To date, "the lunar UFO" remains to be the most debated anomaly in the Apollo missions.

4. STS-114 Shuttle Mission, White Orb near the Shuttle, 2005

As such, on its flight during the NASA STS-114 space shuttle in 2005, cameras captured footage of a white, orb-like object apparently drifting near the orbiting space shuttle Discovery. This appeared to shadow closely behind the shuttle, causing mission control to immediately become concerned over possible debris or even some sort of space junk. NASA briefly postponed re-entry to inquire as to the origin of this mysterious object.

Although NASA extensively analyzed it, they were not able to identify what it was, and this sparked more speculation among the UFO enthusiasts. However, it could be some space debris or a piece of an insulation blanket, but it had an almost spherical or ball-like appearance, and so within the proximity of the shuttle, many people were left to wonder if there was something much more mystifying.

5. STS-80 Shuttle Mission, 1996 – Mysterious lights formation:

One of the most bizarre UFO videos ever captured by NASA actually originated from the STS-80 Shuttle Mission in 1996. As the shuttle orbited the planet, the camera caught three glowing objects that started to appear over Earth's atmosphere. Those lights were moving in a deliberate circular formation and then just hovered there before shooting off.

This is a rare sighting not only because of the synchronized movement of these objects but how they would interact with each other. Critics have pointed out that these could be space debris or some form of natural atmospheric phenomenon, but many UFO researchers believe that what the formations and movements indicate is intelligent control.

NASA's Position on UFOs

Although NASA has been consistent in reports that none of these sightings are those of alien spacecraft, it has had to admit the existence of UAPs. The agency says most of them are caused by space debris, ice fragments, or flaws of a camera. However, with the growing public interest and even the admission of unexplained sightings by the U.S. government, NASA has, of late, spoken much more candidly about investigating the occurrence of such things.

In 2021, NASA actually formed a team to study UAPs after urging scientific analysis of the mysterious phenomena. That push, however, came after the broader push from government agencies, which initiated after the United States Department of Defense declassified some reports on UAP sightings.

Conclusion: Are We Being Watched?

These five are just a few of the countless anomalies NASA has photographed throughout its years. Many, however, can be explained as natural or man-made phenomena while others remain unsolved mysteries which continue to fuel speculations about extraterrestrial life or advanced technologies that may be monitoring Earth.

Whether these sightings are just space debris or something much more extraordinary, the universe is too big and certainly too much to it. Who knows what other groundbreaking discoveries await us in the following years as technology grows and our knowledge of the space? Could one of these unexplained UFO sightings be our first proof of life beyond Earth? Only time will tell.
